Rapid Eye Movement

I've been traveling back in time. Where self hate and privilege collide in black and white format. My spirit is being tested by unforseen shadows that lurk around corners. I faced my own shadow in my dreams that night. Jung said that "the encounter with the shadow is the 'apprentice-piece' in the individual's development...that with the anima is the 'masterpiece'".^[1] Jung viewed the anima process as being one of the sources of creative ability. I looked it directly in the eye as we connected. We acknowledged each other. I am no longer afraid. Shielded by the white light that covers me. Protected by all that IS. Some people get me, some people won't, some people will never get it. The beginning of individuation has led me to a place without boundary in strength, solidarity and love.

Saturday morning at Pershing Square I met up with thousands of protesters in hopes for CHANGE THROUGH SOLIDARITY. It was an amazing feeling to be surrounded by love, peace and unity. Some ask, "why are people in the streets?" People are marching for human rights. Everyone in this country should have the basic necessities like a place to live, a job and health insurance...the basic needs to raise their family. I am fighting for our educational system. Big corporations are putting more money into celebrity TV programs and fancy sport centers while several schools are closing down and teachers are being laid off. What about the future of our children? in addition to a long list of things, I am also fighting for a better environment and spreading the word about self sufficiency. Grow your own food and/or start a community garden. They are injecting our foods with additives and preservatives to keep us addicted to medications. This movement is about shifting into a consciousness for all humanity. This movement is about shifting into an awareness that all of us need to work together in order to strengthen the whole. We can no longer live in a fantasy world and think that everyone has the same opportunities only because you have a job and they do not. Life situations can come up at any given time. Sometimes those circumstances will determine your health, your job, your sanity. WE MUST HAVE COMPASSION FOR OTHERS. This march is not about hoodlums and uneducated trouble makers in the streets. It is not about wanting a hand out. I saw thousands of families and individuals who were living in tents unemployed-with college degrees. A lot of these same people have been out of work for 3 or more years and can't even get a job at McDonalds. I marched with people of all ages, colors, and backgrounds. This march was occupied with people who had jobs and those who did not. The 99% are the people who make up America. The 99% work for big corporations and the 99% buy from big corporations. Without the 99% the 1% would not be making billions. There are now protests all over the world. People are asking, "why?" THE WORLD IS FIGHTING FOR HUMAN RIGHTS. Do your research and stop watching the news. Start with raw documentation from youtube or looking at pictures like the ones I am sharing from my experience. Most of all READ BOOKS. The media has a way of making you see what they want you to see. People are asking, "what is the agenda?" The agenda is to stay proactive. The agenda is to stay strong in the name of solidarity. BEING PROACTIVE BRINGS AWARENESS. AWARENESS BRINGS CHANGE. Just imagine if people like Martin Luther King did not stand up for your human rights.

The only thing kids really care about is love and happiness. There is something wrong with the world if we teach our kids to bully, ridicule and outcast something or someone that is out of the typical label. There is something wrong if we'd rather teach our kids how to fight instead of appreciating love amongst humanity. I will always choose tolerance and compassion over hate and misinformed education.

Thank you for reading my blog! This blog was designed for people to start a dialogue about events, ideas, themes and situations that are out of the norm. It is best to put yourself in as many uncomfortable situations so that you can learn from yourself and others. It is not about judgement, or religion, nor politics. I am not forcing you to believe my ideas. All of us have our opinions and no one is perfect. However, I am challenging you to let the discomfort linger temporarily. Think about why certain feelings are surfacing and then let it go. At this very moment we need tolerance. The more we understand others, compassion grows. Humanity has already built too many walls based on miscommunication and ignorance. I want to build bridges of understanding and empathy. When we strip away all things we were taught and programmed to believe from birth, can we still make the best decisions for ourselves? Once we decide to do our own individual research through the human experience, will you listen to your heart or just continue to follow the masses? Will you allow yourself to love your neighbor despite sexual orientation, religion, culture and tradition? It takes a stronger person to love rather than hate. The title really does not fit this film. However, I still enjoyed watching and learning from it.

THE ANARCHIST LIBRARY IN SERBIA

I'm happy to share that several unexpected events have been presenting themselves this summer. The latest news is that my zine "Abstract By Nature" has been selected to be in the ANARCHIST LIBRARY in Serbia. I knew little about this country and was intrigued when they contacted me.

This is what I learned about Serbia..

Serbia became a stand-alone sovereign republic in summer 2006 after Montenegro voted in a referendum for independence from the Union of Serbia and Montenegro. Zoran Djindic became the president and was involved with an anarchist group when he was young. Trivo Indjic, another former anarchist, became Serbian ambassador to Spain. The first Serbian socialist, Zivojin Zujovic (1838-1870), was a follower of Proudhon. Zujovic influenced the first Serbian socialist theoretician Svetozar Marković (1846-1875), a central figure of the early Serbian revolutionary movement. Marković was not an anarchist, but was significantly influenced by anarchism, and his ideas contain libertarian concepts.

According to Reporters Without Borders (RSF) in 2010, "death threats, physical or verbal assaults, harassment and corruption are unfortunately still the daily lot of the press." Journalists have been the victims of reprisals for investigating the criminal underworld.

I wrote this zine to educate and empower people who are constantly conflicted with societal taboos specifically in the culture and traditions of the minority family. Including 411 on the Black punk scene in Los Angeles. I also added some of my political comics and empowering poetry.

[Anarchist] a person who promotes disorder or excites revolt against any established rule, law, or custom.

I do not consider myself an anarchist. However, I do believe in speaking my truth, even if it is against the grain or going against popular demand/opinion. Not because I want to cause trouble but because I am an individual with individual thoughts. We are caught up in a society that can't think for themselves even when we know it's not the best decision. The world has turned into a popularity contest. My mission is to send out as much love and compassion into the universe. My mission is to constantly learn from people who are different from me. I want to place myself in as many uncomfortable situations as possible so I can grow in my thoughts and ideas. it is our responsibility to learn, understand and respect people for who they are. We do not all share the same life experiences. We can not expect or assume that everyone has the same defined perceptions.

As I write this I realize that I can relate to the definition of an anarchist more than I thought. I hope that my zine continues to empower people all over the world for years to come.

BBQ FOR BOOBS was hype last Sunday! This event was a benefit for breast cancer awareness at The Joint in Los Angeles. Rhythm Natives set the tone with a solid set that got the crowd moving. They took hip hop and reggae to another level! Don't sleep on this band, look them up and catch them on tour. It was an action packed night of strong sets one after another. Mahi Gato, Black Party Politics, Punk Funk Mob and Dead Brain Burockracy kept the energy notch at 100. It was a mix of punk, funk, hip hop, reggae, rock, and alternative at its best!

As the bands performed legendary surfer, William L. Lamar screened his skate and surf videos. Check out his documentary "Soul on a Wave" and stop by his skateboard/surf shop Planet Maple in Los Angeles.

This is my kitchen area where I place all sorts of things, as you can tell. I found an abandoned, plain wooden table in my neighborhood. I sanded it down, created a design on the table top and painted a blue gloss coat over the entire table. On the wall is a still life of my favorite bamboo plant. I made it with found cardboard pieces, pastels, acrylics and graphite. The colors and the movement of the shapes keeps it flowing from top to bottom.

I am pruning my garden. The rain is gone and the days are starting to feel like spring.
The citrus trees all around my house are blooming. My plants are standing tall at the command of the sun. This year I am going to try my luck with Japanese cucumbers, yellow peppers, thyme and peppermint. The chest is filled with precious gifts from mother nature, organic soil I have been cultivating all year long. I am also going to grow upside down this summer. Sounds funny, I know. I'll post pictures soon.
Remember, life is really not as serious as we believe it to be, and when we recognize this fact, it responds by giving us more play time. The moment you start seeing that life is a celebration all burdens will disappear. Keep practicing.
I heard if you want the fairies to protect your garden all you have to do is ask. I'll let you know if I see one :)

Grand Canyon and the Vortex

Greetings friends! Here I am sitting on top of a vortex in Sedona, Arizona. I decided to take a spiritual expedition to one of the wonders of the world, the grand canyon. To my surprise I discovered so much more. 8,000 feet up left me speechless and very emotional at first glance. I felt connected to the universe and it made me feel alive. I am piecing together a short film of my trip. I have memories to share, stay posted!
The vortexes in Sedona are swirling centers of subtle energy coming out from the surface of the earth. The vortex energy is not exactly electricity or magnetism, although it does leave a slight measurable residual magnetism in the places where it is strongest.There are four main energy vortexes in Sedona. The subtle energy that exists at these locations interacts with who a person is inside. The energy resonates with and strengthens the Inner Being of each person that comes within about a quarter to a half mile of it. This resonance happens because the vortex energy is very similar to the subtle energy operating in the energy centers inside each person. If you are at all a sensitive person, it is easy to feel the energy at these vortexes.

Mental Spring Cleaning

This is my little tranquility garden. I love to plant things during this time of year. My compost has bloomed beautifully giving off a wonderful aroma. It is mother nature at its best. It holds history of the past and awareness of the present. It is soil rich and moist to the touch. I can't wait to start the cycle of life with an herb garden this year.

Spring is a time to reflect on priorities in the name of mental health. True happiness is freedom. Break away from toxic people, places or things. Find that safe haven that keeps you grounded, secure and flexible. Take on the world like a farmer. He plants without doubt. A farmer trusts the seasons. A farmer trusts the flow of the universe to help grow a bounty of crops each year. Happy Spring Cleaning!

Filmwalker Productions was created by director/producer Tamarat Makonnen. His cutting edge style and substance sets him apart from the rest. Tamarat has composed a notable body of work that is cinematic, stylized, and visually striking. His projects have aired on MTV, BET, and Muchmusic (Canada), as well as in several news and music publications. Tamarat has directed music videos and EPKs (electronic press kit) for clients such as: Columbia Records, Warlock Records, Loud Records/Steve Rifkind Company, Delicious Vinyl, Island Records, Serchlite Music, and EMI Records. He is a passionate filmmaker whose hard work and dedication has truly paid off. There are only certain stars that shine bright and Tamarat is definitely one of those artists that stand out.

*Tell me a little about yourself personally and creatively /personally.

Tamarat: Well where do I start...I'm a film director. That's my passion as well as my occupation.

*What first got you interested in film?

Tamarat: My family has always been involved in the arts. My great uncle Johnnie Berry was a vaudeville performer who traveled with Bob Hope and performed regularly at the Apollo Theater. My cousin Stephanie Berry is an dancer and actress who was always performing in various plays and shows. All these things definitely had and impact on my interests in film and the arts as a whole.

*What are some of your favorite American films? Foreign films? Television shows?

Tamarat: Steven Spielberg and George Lucas really sparked my imagination as well as an entire generation with films like "Close Encounters of the Third Kind", "ET", "Raiders of the Lost Ark" and of course "Star Wars". Spike Lee's rise to prominence was truly mesmerizing to me as well. School Daze, Do The Right Thing and Malcolm X would be some of favorites from Lee. The Godfather, Taxi Driver and Sunset Boulevard, the list goes on and on. Foreign films, well there's so many but off hand there's Federico Fellini "La Dolce Vita", Akira Kurosawa's "The Seven Samurai", and in recent years Fernando Meirelles' "City of God."

*How would you describe your film education?

Tamarat: Trial by fire (laughter). I went to Virginia Union University with a major in English Language Arts. They had a small film/video department and I pretty much had all access to their equipment so I shot a few short films while in school. After I graduated I jumped head first into the film industry working in production on as many projects as I possibly could. It was there that I would ask questions to anyone that I could. That hands on experience was my best education.

*How would you describe the film "scene" where you live?

Tamarat: I live in Los Angeles so this is the film scene (laughter). It's a unique city because everyone is from somewhere else. That includes myself, I'm a native New Yorker. It's a city full of opportunity but you have to been willing to feel the sting of rejection from time to time as well.

*What advice do you have for anyone interested in trying to succeed in your city?

Tamarat: I would say narrow it down. If you come to LA and you want to be a writer, filmmaker, dancer and a comedian then there's a chance that something is going to get compromised. I would suggest focusing on one thing at a time and giving that one thing 110% of your attention. Also don't expect it to happen over night. If it does then that's wonderful but be prepared for the long battle.

*Who or what do you cite as major inspirations (they do not have to directly relate to film) for your work?

My mother is a huge inspiration. She's a very spiritual woman who has always instilled in me the need to live life to the fullest. She's also always supported my career as a filmmaker, no matter how risky a career it may be. I've also been inspired by a slew of film directors: Francis Ford Coppola, Martin Scorsese, Spike Lee, George Lucas, Frederico Fellini and John Woo to name a few.

Do you consider "Dreams and Shadows a "Black film?"

Tamarat: That's an interesting question. The lead actors happen to be white but I'm a black director. I wrote, produced and directed the film so in that way I guess you would call it "Black Film" but most people associate the term with the actors in front of the camera not the actual filmmakers behind the lens. As long as my work is appreciated and inspires other young people to pick up a camera and tell stories then I'm okay with whatever they want to label it.

The Young Poet Society gathered last weekend for Long Beach City College Reggae Fest. It was a sun-breezy day of family, friends and great music. The booth next to the flag pole belonged to Y.P.S. , a group of young creative scholars who host a bi-monthly open mic night at the college. Their motto is, "Find your voice. Why be silent?" On the table lay Urban Voodoo's C.D. , colorful encouragement coins, beautiful hand painted cards, wooden stash boxes and righteous t-shirts all created by their very own members. Y.P.S performed later in the day, warming it up for main artist of the evening, Pantu Banton. It was a day to remember! Contact me if you would like more info on Y.P.S and /or these unique products.

RHYTHM NATIVES IS HIP HOP!

The Rhythm Natives is hip hop, with a fusion of reggae, alternative and jazz. I was fortunate to see them play and they definitely know how to rock the crowd. It is a rare occasion and wonderful treat to watch a polished, live hip hop band perform. Their music holds a reminiscence of the golden age era when hip hop was characterized by influence, innovation, quality and diversity. It takes me back to the time when there was more emphasis on experimentation of instruments over rhymes. What makes them unique is that they are a group of friends that grew up together before they decided to start a band. Some of the members have known each other since they were 6 years old! This just proves, Rhythm Natives is as authentic as it comes.Their album drops October 19Th and will definitely keep the party jumping. Support L.A. artists and buy their CD. Mos def, go check them out when they come to your city. The Rhythm Natives is one of those amazing bands that truly captures the culture and spirit of L.A. Don't sleep on it!

Good day friends! I don't know what it is about this summer but I have been painting and drawing more than ever (my fingers hurt), occasionally performing at venues and taking time out to dance the night away at secret locations. I think my mood mostly stems from my process of digesting everything that is going on in my life. I spent several years and thousands of dollars studying and becoming a master at taking care of other peoples problems. Being an artist took a backseat although I have always managed to keep my passion for the arts in view. I am grateful to have such strong, passionate supporters in my corner. I have never needed a large army to make me feel confident. It only takes a small group of quality folks to keep me motivated. I've pretty much turned my passion into reality, even if the sacrifices were detrimental. Over the last three yeas I have been tested to my highest peek emotionally, mentally, and physically. At times even feeling overwhelmed and guilty for taking time out to take care of self. I have concluded a great deal about my friends, family and work ethic. I sometimes get caught up in being misunderstood or being naive which therefore leads me to disappointment in others.
I am working through understanding that people have their own journey to travel and it may not correlate with where you are or who you are at this point and time. I am now aware that this is part of "non-attachment" like in my Buddhist studies. Society has taken non-attachment out of context. People come in and out of our lives for different reasons. In order to unify we must understand the importance of humility. Send love and encouragement as individuals move in different directions. We were not all meant to go in the same direction or agree on the same things. However, I will never wish anyone ill-will ( like burning the Qu'ran). There are lessons to learn from people different from yourself. Fear of the unknown leads to ignorance and disrespect. If we all respected each other this earth would be much more balanced on all levels. This is an example of non-attachment. To me, attachments are attached to private agendas. There would be no need to attach to anything if we all looked out for humanity instead of just ourselves.
I continue to reinvent myself based on my experiences. I question those who have the same ideologies at 18 yrs old as they do at 35 yrs old. The only thing permanent is change. The significance in my existence is leading a simple, purpose filled life.
Living in Los Angeles, artists often get conditioned to think that we must have a certain mentality to reach the top, therefore, superficial-ness is the only thing that shines through a persons character. People are so quick to judge a book by its cover because they are afraid some of their own "shit" (insecurities, judgements, ego) will come up. What blocks people from tolerance and empathy is usually a battle between who you really are Vs. what society defines as "who you need to be." At times people take the easiest approach instead of really having the desire and mental capacity to understand a perspective different than their own.
I guess what I am trying to say is that we must live IT, we must be IT- in work and play. I am pro-humanity. Piddle Productions is my life and my art. The importance of my struggle is in bringing communities together to learn from one another. We must stop minimizing and blocking unity from humanity. One thing that will always stick in my head is when Obama said, "...it is time to take responsibility." I find that people tend to have a whole lot to say but they are not living IT. There is a quote that says, "When you blame others, you give up your power to change."

On another note, I am publishing my own zine called "The Blaqbook." The first edition will have my poetry, artwork, holistic DIY health tips, cheap date ideas, and my kooky comic strip called "The Kiwi & Koki Chronicles." Please stay tuned!

This is an awesome picture from a Los Angeles event called "Naked Desert." It is an invite only- annual event for photographers and nude models in the middle of the desert. The theme is, Celebrating the Diversity of the Human Body. I was honored to be the first person (ever) to film this event, as it all magically unfolds. I made a documentary about this unbelievable experience. I am in post production. I would love to screen it soon. Due to popular demand the play WOMBAN is coming back to a theatre near you in Los Angeles! As you all know Womban did its first run in June. As the Stage Manager it was hard work, but with everyones commitment and dedication it became such an uplifting and humbling experience for everyone involved. If you did not get a chance to see it please come out this time around. This is a story that everyone can relate to in one way or another. Most of all it is about female empowerment and understanding the importance of healing before you can grow. The cast and crew are starting to meet regularly so I will continue to keep you posted on dates. I plan on getting more behind the scenes pictures and video this time. However, a Stage Managers job is never done, so we will see. haha.

I have been invited to do a poetry tour! I am nervous and excited but I think it is time to push myself to the next level. My comfort zone has always been behind the scenes. Sometimes life puts situations in front of you that are out of your control. Go with it.

To be simple is arduous, because to be simple costs everything that you have. You have to lose all to be simple. This is why people have chosen to be complex and they have forgotten how to be simple. Only a simple heart sings with God in deep harmony. To reach that point you will have to find your heart, your own throb, your own beat.

At the Half-Way Mark

This year has been nothing but wonderful blessings in disguise. Although, I am more comfortable behind the scene, I had a desire to perform more and I have. I got my feet wet at Indigo Lounge and from there other projects started to present themselves. now I am performing in May with The Young Poet Society and a play called "Womban" in June.

I've had my ups and downs but I've always managed to see the positive in every situation. People come and go in our lives so we can learn and grow from one another. I have no regrets. It is very important to surround yourself with people who are positive, secure and selfless. There is enough space for everyone to be heard, understood and appreciated in the world. Respect others and all will come back full circle.

I've been putting together events since 2003. So much has changed, yet my vision becomes clearer each year. I feel I have found my purpose: to bring about awareness, activism and education in the form of artistic expression. Honestly, I am letting my heart and my soul guide me. Trusting in the unknown can be scary but I am learning that the universe works in mysterious ways if you allow it.

As an artist, I won't lie, it has been the hardest thing for me to stay committed in doing a monthly event like Indigo Lounge. However, there has been such positive feedback and I have been told from several well known sources that I contributed something different and unique to the L.A scene. That gave me fuel to keep pushing on. I appreciate everyone who continues to believe in this vision I've had since High School.

I plan on producing One-Offs like I used to. One offs are a few random shows/events that pop up from time to time through out the year. I am in desperate need of taking a vacation. Sometime this summer I will take a long awaited hiatus. Moving about the country for a year or two seems more and more of an option to me these days. My thirst for travel, culture, sociology, and the arts remain my inspiration and part of my identity. I hope you continue to follow my journey, wherever I go and whatever I will continue to produce. I'll always promise to give you the best in eclectic entertainment for the soul, open mind and free spirited. I have other projects in development. So stay tuned!

Indigo lounge is a community of artists that spread education, activism and awareness through poetry and music. It is a place where we gather to network in a safe environment with like minded people who have a desire to uplift humanity. Indigo lounge digs deeper than the average poetry spot. It’s not just about entertainment, it’s also about sharing resources and valuable information. It is a representation of Los Angeles culture and how we can progress and evolve together.

Working on your professional reel for auditions or paid work? Indigo lounge is a platform that tapes shows so that we can help foster your career towards bigger and better projects. As an artist it is important to document your work. I believe, artists are the true historians of the world. This venue has been established as a vessel for independent artists to sell their promotional items and most importantly, be heard.

Whether you define yourself as a poet or spoken word artists, a professional does his/her research and knows when to humble himself/herself towards certain projects or creative collectives. We are all linked together in this great cycle of life. When we allow ourselves to give without expecting to receive, the universe comes back to us in great measures. I admire artists who share their verses to provoke feelings, thoughts and emotions in hopes of inspiring others. Saving someone’s life or mental state as a poet will always be priceless. Being able to empower one self as a poet is priceless. Personally, there is something empty about wanting to be a “poet” just to get paid. As the founder, I envisioned this space as a means to start a dialogue. It is not intended for the artist who wants all the attention but refuses to stay present for anything or anyone else. It is not intended for the Hollywood poet who slips out the door like a superstar after their performance is over. I don’t judge people for who they are or who they want to be. Everyone has their own personal journey to travel in life.

If your mind state is of a “Hollywood” poet who demands diva services, this movement is probably not for you. However, I dare you to open your mind and step out of your comfort zone. Share OUR experience at Indigo Lounge. Share YOUR experience at Indigo Lounge. Let’s learn from each other.

At times life is an uphill battle as I continue to push towards new ideas and ventures. The opening night of Indigo Lounge was truly powerful, inspirational and educational. The room was filled with an eclectic mix of groovy people and good vibes. We celebrated an evening of Black history and love for the month of February. We started it with a libation, which is a African ritual to honor and respect those who came before us. It was a magic carpet ride through book passages and historic lessons in the name of spoken word and jazz. Piddle Productions and The Young Poetry Society are putting together a Black History program for Long Beach City College. I am excited, nervous and at times have my doubts if we will be able to pull this off. These young scholars are amazing and I enjoy mentoring young minds. However, it's harder than I expected. What's weird is the creative part is never hard, but getting creative folks coordinated is the killer. I don't know what I got myself into.hehehe. Screw it...I am always down for good challenge. I'll keep you posted. The next Indigo Lounge is March 7th. We are celebrating "WomEns MonTh" with an all female jazz band and female featured poets that will blow your mind! Check out the band!

Polyhymnia (paul-lim-nia) is a group of all female musicians who play their music to make you groove. Each member has a rather extensive background in jazz and classical music. They are not afraid to reach out of their comfort zone and try new things. All members of Polyhymnia are music majors who attend either Cal State Northridge or Cal Arts.

The Dalai Lama tells us to stop expecting life to be easy. Life is full of suffering and is ultimately unsatisfying; The only way to be happy is to train your mind to want less and to train your mind to penetrate the ultimate reality. I am rolling into the year with new hope and ideas. I have been invited to be one of the inspirational speakers at the L.A. Union Workers, "Womens Month Program." I am excited and nervous, but it feels good to be part of a great cause. My dreams have been vivid and seem to be telling me stories of my past. I've been writing like maddd. I feel the birth of a new poem! I've also been invited on a poetry performance tour at the end of the year. I'll have to string you along before I tell you my biggest project of the year. Existentially Speaking...

The existential belief is that human beings are alone in the world. This feeling of aloneness leads to feelings of meaninglessness which can be overcome only by creating one's own values and meanings. Existential psychotherapy suggests that in making our own choices we assume full responsibility for the results and blame no one but ourselves if the result is less than what was desired. We must explore and discover the cause of our emotions of aloneness and meaninglessness, to find new and better ways to manage these anxieties, in order to make new and healthy choices. Lets be free.

My Winter Wonderland

For my holidays I went to Anadarko, Oklahoma also known as the Native American capital of the world. It was nice reconnecting with family in all its dysfunction and unconditional love. I survived a blizzard on Christmas eve which made me respect mother nature in all forms. I was blessed to have a white Christmas after several years. Becoming one with nature, I came back even more inspired to push on in creativity.

Indigo Lounge is February 7th and will be on going every first Sunday of the month. Join us as we celebrate the month of love and black history with live music, featured poets and open mic. This will be an evening to remember. I invite you to embrace compassion and love as an individual and in a community that believes in the power of poetry and music.

Coexist like the birds and the bees, like the seeds that grow flowers and trees. When the wind blows, they don't care about where they are or who they be and who is standing next to me.

Coexist. You see, people choose to make things complex because simple costs EVERYTHING that you have. Are you willing to lose ALL to be simple?

when we recognize the common source of our humanity, like feeling happy, sad or even in fear we are able to see that we are joined together in the great miracle of existance. There is no possibility of global suicide if we are all linked together as one in naturalness and spontaneity.

How can there possibly be war if we are all celebrating as one? Friendliness does not necessarily mean relationship, but there is always a relatedness. And relatedness is out of love. We all can relate without hate. keep it simple.

Every mind lives in its own world. Every minute in the mind has the possibility of being total. Totality is not thinking, brooding, calculating, cunning or clever. Fade those moments. they keep us from experiencing the Godliness that lies within us.

Break out of the cage of conditioning and reach the truth of your own heart. It's not just about cutting the leaves and branches. Don't just prune your judgements, cut the root. individuality is given by existance like the lion who moves alone. but we have been conditioned to be sheep.

Don't be sheep. Personality is imposed my society. Personality is a social convenience. Only a simple heart throbs with God. Only a simple heart sings with God in harmony. An empty mind is original and revolutionary in action. Keep it simple. Coexist.

The final Day

So it's over. My 5 day fast was a success. I feel full of energy and cleansed mentally and physically. My dreams were metaphorical. I discharged waste from mind, body, soul, spirit. It feels good to rise from the fog. My music is coming along wonderfully. I can't wait to release my CD in 2010. It's some spoken word, soulful house and electro hip hop. I have several influences that I hope will inspire all who listen to it. The universe is sending me love. I take it humbly and pass it on to you. Stay connected, I have so many delicious treats coming your way!

4th Day of Fast

I had a dream I took a pregnancy test for someone other than myself. When I took the test, I started hemorrhaging like crazy, chunks of blood all over. I was driving with a friend. I needed to get to a bathroom. we stopped at this public gas station bathroom, the kind you run into on long distant road trips. There was a line of people waiting. I was hemorrhaging hard by this time, chunks of blood all over my clothes. My friend got inpatient and wanted to leave. I told her I wanted to stay, I needed the bathroom.

Then I dreamt I was in this fancy blue and gold bathroom taking a shower. I was talking to my friend out of the country. I had a water proof cellphone device on speaker phone in the shower with me. She told me of how she slipped and fell and bumped her head the other night and laid unconscious for a hour before someone found her. All of a sudden a brownish, yellow thick substance pours out of my mouth and my throat and I rip it from my tongue. It kept coming out, pouring out slow like brown glue. It's hard and clotty in some areas like glue gets right before it gets hard. My aunt knocked on the bathroom door because the kids need to use the bathroom. I ignored her at first as I continued to scrape this sticky goo from my mouth and tongue and the back of my throat. I saw it slowly go down the drain. I finally let her and and the kids in. They do not acknowledge me as the goo keeps flowing out of my. They use the bathroom and totally ignore what is going on with me. They leave. My mother sticks her head in the door and tells me to hurry up. She is totally oblivious to what is going on with me. I tell her I am sick. I lay on the floor in the middle of the bathroom in fetal position. All I hear is running water. The shower is still on.

I Fast in Silence

I've decided to fast for two weeks to become aware of the material word, desire, and to understand and experience suffering. This all came to me in a spiritual dream. I've never been on a fast before and really had no clue of what it detailed. After completing two intense days of the lemonade detox (water, lemons, cayenne pepper, maple syrup) I soon realized I am on medication and needed something heavier in my stomach in order for me to take my meds. On the third day I made a smoothie with just organic fruits, flax, and combined it with the lemonade detox recipe for breakfast and lunch. For dinner I will continue with the lemonade detox. I guess you can say I'm on a raw food fast. We must remember that fasting is not a diet plan or self punishment. Jesus fasted for 40 days. Fasting is between you and God.

In doing research just last night I stumbled across some of Gandhi's quotes:

-Fasting is for self-purification.

-A complete fast is a complete and literal denial of self. It is the truest prayer.

-A genuine fast cleanses the body, mind and soul. It crucifies the flesh and to that extent sets the soul free.

-What the eyes are for the outer world, fasts are for the inner.

-Whenever there is distress which one cannot remove one must fast and pray.

Dia de Los Muertos

Dia de Los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is a colorful festival celebrating the living. In the United States and in Mexico's larger cities, families build altars in their homes, dedicating them to the dead. They surround these altars with flowers, food and pictures of the deceased. They light candles and place them next to the altar. The Aztecs and other Meso-American civilizations kept skulls as trophies and displayed them during the ritual. The skulls were used to symbolize death and rebirth. The Aztecs and other Meso-American civilizations believed that the dead came back to visit during the month long ritual. The natives viewed it as the continuation of life. Instead of fearing death, they embraced it. To them, life was a dream and only in death did they become truly awake. The ritual has evolved to include other cultures like Native Americans and African Americans doing their own dances. This was my third year celebrating this event. Each year Hollywood Forever Cemetery comes alive (4p-11p) with live music, traditional dancing (of the Latin diaspora) and thousands of people dressed in costumes and painted faces, honoring death. I took a fascinating walk through the cemetery viewing beautifully decorated alters. Some people stood by the alters and shared their stories of the person they were honoring. Inside the mausoleum were breathe taking art exhibits as well.

It seems as if The culture that I am used to is always anticipating death or "the end." It's scary and depressing. Like my grandmother stated in her autobiography, "Christians always tell you how to prepare for death but they don't tell you how to live." She is still 100% Christian and always will be. I don't think her intentions by any means were meant negatively. However, there comes a point in everyone's life when one comes to self awareness through life's twists and turns, no matter what you believe in. For some reason Dia de Los Muertos surfaced feelings that made me think of how culture and tradition shapes our perception on death and the dying.

According to Christians, the Rapture is "the end" when born-again Christians will meet Christ. Many believe that this will happen unexpectedly, and people will suddenly rise into the sky. At some point after the Rapture, Christ will begin a thousand-year reign. According to Matthew 24, Jesus will come in glory and will send out his angels to gather his chosen ones from the four corners of the world. The Apocalypse describes these events in a series of visions: Some bright and positive, relating to the fulfillment of God's justice and the salvation of His chosen ones; and some dark and negative, relating to the terrible plagues that will come on earth for the sins of mankind. We tend to emphasize the dark and negative side, seeing the increase of evil around us; but that comes from our lack of courage and worldliness.

Personally, I think God put religion on the earth just to see how far we would stray from the true meaning of world compassion and tolerance of others. Some people miss the entire point. All religions basically have one theme: Universal love. Love the next person as you would love yourself. Do the best you can with what you are given, without hurting anyone.

When people who follow religion tell me to separate, discriminate, and hate others, I have a problem. When I hear people who follow religion tell someone they will go to hell because their beliefs are different from theirs, I have a problem. When people that don't know me tell me I am going to hell, I have a problem. I believe that God wants YOU to read between the lines and you don't get that fully just from reading the "holy" book or adapting to what people tell you. Someone once said, Religion is someone else's experience, spirituality is your own. The relationship that you choose to have with God (or whatever higher power) is very personal and you should not have to prove that to anyone. Be aware of trickery and hypocrites. You can take that anyway you want. In the beginning, middle and end, I'll use my common sense. I am not afraid of death, although the mysteriousness of it all intrigues me.

I say "people who follow religion" because the fact is, I have nothing against religion its self. I know that Dia les Muertos is not a religion but for some reason it got me thinking about how people view death. Last weekend I celebrated death at cemetery and I did not feel sad, depressed or spooked out. It was a celebration of the circle of life. I recommend that all people come out of their comfort zone and experience something entirely different without passing judgement.

To those of you who came to Indigo Lounge on October 18th, thank you so much for your support (Ika you're the greatest)! It was one of those nights were everything flowed together in harmony. I set the tone with the first piece titled "Indigo." I must say, everyone seemed in tune with themselves and their fellow artist. Indigo Lounge is a melting pot of the L.A. art scene at its best. All I can say is, you should've been there! I would like to thank all of the artists who did their thang! A shout out to Blake and his crew from the C.S.U.N music program who jammed hard all night long. Folks are always so amazed on how young and talented these Katz really are. They did an awesome job! This time we really utilized other musicians and singers in addition to the house band and poets. Although an intimate crowd, the vibe was really powerful to say the least. It feels great to get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, and come to a place surrounded by real talent, positivity, and non-pretentious energy. Overall, it was a colorful evening full of pleasant surprises. Every artist dips his brush in his own soul, and paints his own nature into his pictures. This may be one of L.A.'s best kept secrets. And you know what? I like it. Unfortunately and fortunately, Indigo Lounge is going on hiatus due to the holiday season. However, rumor is I may be coming back stronger than ever with a residency at 2nd St. Jazz. Don't sleep. Stay connected!

Angela White is a multi-talented, multi-faceted poet. She sings, has arranged music, directed choral groups and is spiritually and socially motivating. The short list does not include her passion for photography, her willingness to assist and volunteer to benefit others, and her love for family. Angela's first book of poetry, Inspired & Wired, a mature composition of poetry and life contemplations, is proof that the intertwining of confidence and faith produces explosive, irrefutable results. The passion she displays for her work is contagious. Known to her fans simply as Jacnique (pronounced Zsa’nique), this San Francisco songstress embodies all the qualities of a natural superstar. She is an avid songwriter, pristine vocalist, and a runway renaissance woman. Her sultry soul music represents a harmonic groove in a world full of ambient noise and sound. Before she knew it, she began making quite a name for herself on the Bay Area club scene performing alongside well know jazz guitarist, Tony DeWayne. Soon after, she was gracing stages and receiving critical acclaim from Hollywood, CA to Las Vegas, NV and in her home town of San Francisco, CA. In 2006 Jacnique started her own independent record label and publishing company, SirenFire Music Works and SirenFire Music Publishing. The dynamic diva has recently put the finishing touches on her debut CD entitled, “Trial By Fire." This CD is an eclectic blend of Sultry Soul, Smooth Jazz and Love Songs.

Qizhong was the resident bassist of the NUS Jazz Band for several years, under the guidance of band leaders Rick Smith, Christy Smith, and Tan Chin Boo. He set up local jazz/funk band ‘The Lounge Lizards’ and have been actively gigging for the past few years, playing at venues such as the Esplanade Outdoor Theatre, the Esplanade Concourse, the Arts House, the Swiss Club, Singapore Expo, and the Asian Civilizations Museum. He is at home with various genres, including funk, jazz, fusion, blues and bossa. Qizhong is also classically trained in the piano and music theory, and plays the double bass with the NUS Wind Symphony. Q is also a student at USC where he is getting his PHD in Linguistics.
